Razor Wire Supplied and Installed in South Africa

Razor wire is steel tape with sharp blades crimped around a high-tensile core wire. Fixed to the top of a wall or fence, it makes climbing over slow and painful, which is why it is so common on South African homes, farms and factories. diamondmesh.co.za makes buying it simple: send one free request and a fencing contractor or supplier in your area replies with a quote for the wire, brackets and installation.

Types of razor wire fence

A razor wire fence can be a topping on an existing barrier or a barrier on its own. The main types are:

  • Razor wire concertina: spiral coils, often 450 mm, 730 mm or 980 mm across, that open out along the top of a wall or fence
  • Razor wire flat wrap: flattened loops that sit close to the wall or fence line, neater in suburbs and easier to fit
  • Razor wire mesh: welded panels of razor tape used as a fence or a barrier on its own
  • Straight razor line: single strands strung between brackets

Cost of razor wire

The cost of razor wire depends on the type, the coil diameter, the blade profile and whether the tape is galvanised or stainless steel. Stainless costs more but lasts much longer at the coast. Installation adds brackets or Y-arms, fixing wires, clips and labour, and work at height on walls needs ladders or scaffolding. Concertina uses more wire per metre than flat wrap. Hardware store prices for a single coil do not include any of this. A quote for your measured length, with the coil size and material stated, is the only reliable way to compare prices.

Fitting razor wire on fence lines and walls

Razor wire on fence lines is usually fixed to straight or angled brackets on palisade, diamond mesh or clear view fences. On walls it is fixed to brackets bolted into the top. Check your municipal by-laws and any estate rules first, as many set a minimum height above the ground and do not allow razor wire to hang over a pavement or a neighbour's property. A good installer keeps the wire tight and away from places where children can reach it.

How to compare razor wire quotes

The cheapest price per metre is not always the best value in fencing. When your razor wire quote arrives, check:

  • Materials: the wire or steel thickness, the type of galvanising or coating, and the pole size and spacing. Thinner material looks the same on day one but fails sooner.
  • Foundations: how deep the poles are set and whether they are concreted. Most fence failures start at the posts.
  • What is included: gates, locks, corner stays, removal of an old fence, site clearing and rubble removal.
  • Guarantee and timing: workmanship guarantees, the expected start date and how long installation will take.

Our service passes your request to a contractor who works in your area, so you can ask these questions before you commit. It costs nothing and you are under no obligation to accept the quote.

Request a razor wire quote

To get an accurate quote quickly, include:

  • The total length in metres and the height of the wall or fence
  • Whether you want concertina, flat wrap or razor mesh
  • Galvanised or stainless steel
  • What the wire will be fixed to: wall, palisade or mesh fence
  • Supply only, or supply and installation

Photos or a rough sketch of the boundary help too. Mention them in the details and the contractor will ask for them.

Frequently asked questions

Is razor wire legal on a boundary wall?

Generally yes, but most municipalities have by-laws on height and placement, and estates may have their own rules. Your contractor should know the local requirements.

Which lasts longer, galvanised or stainless razor wire?

Stainless steel lasts much longer, especially near the coast where salt air rusts galvanised wire faster. Galvanised wire is cheaper and works well inland.
